BSN Round 38: Leader Capitanes lose to Cangrejeros

There are only two more rounds left in the Regular Season in BSN. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

Top ranked Capitanes (20-8) recorded its eighth loss in Santurce on Saturday night. Visitors were defeated by fourth ranked Cangrejeros (14-13) 90-86. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Capitanes. Cangrejeros forced 20 Capitanes turnovers. Strangely Capitanes outrebounded Cangrejeros 36-24 including 23 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The best player for the winners was American Thomas Robinson (208-91, college: Kansas, agency: Network Sports International) who scored 20 points and 7 rebounds. American-Venezuelan Donta Smith (201-83, college: SE Illinois JC) chipped in 16 points. Naturalized U.S. Virgin Islands point guard Walter Hodge (183-86, college: Florida) produced 23 points and 5 assists for the guests. Capitanes' coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. Cangrejeros maintains fourth position with 14-13 record. Capitanes at the other side still keep top place with eight games lost. Cangrejeros are looking forward to face league's leader Vaqueros in Bayamon in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Capitanes will play at home against the league's second-placed Leones and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Fifth-ranked Indios (13-17) made lots of trouble for second ranked Brujos (21-9) in Guayama. Brujos managed to secure only one-point victory 88-87. However their fans expected easier game. Naturalized American point guard Marcus Fillyaw (185-94, college: KWC) saved the victory by scoring 16 points and 9 assists. Anthony Benson contributed with 21 points and 5 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners. International swingman Justin Reyes (193-95, college: STAC) replied with a double-double by scoring 11 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists for Indios. Indios' coach let to play ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Brujos maintains second position with 21-9 record having just three point less than leader Bayamon. Indios lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the fifth place with 17 games lost. Brujos will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Indios will play at home against Piratas (#4) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very close game took place in Fajardo between Leones and Cariduros. Third ranked Leones (17-12) got a very close victory on the road over second-ranked Cariduros (16-12). Leones managed to escape with a 3-point win 79-76 in the game for the second place. It was a key game for the second position in the league. Kenneth Faried had a double-double by scoring 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners. Leones' coach used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. Victor Rudd responded with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Leones have a solid four-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place. Defending champion Cariduros dropped to the third position with 12 games lost. They share it with Quebradillas. Leones will meet league's leader Capitanes in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Cariduros will play against Mets and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Rest of the games of round 38 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
San German defeated Quebradillas in a road game 110-101. Guayama beat Carolina at home 98-93. Humacao lost to Bayamon on the opponent's court 91-101.

Quebradillas - San German 101-110

There was a minor upset in Quebradillas where 3rd ranked Piratas (16-12) were defeated by sixth ranked Atleticos (8-22) 110-101 on Friday. Atleticos made 21-of-24 free shots (87.5 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. American Paris Bass (203-95, college: Detroit) had a double-double by scoring 32 points and 13 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and the other American import point guard Tjader Fernandez (178-94) chipped in 10 points and 11 assists during the contest. Five Atleticos players scored in double figures. American point guard Tu Holloway (183-89, college: Xavier) responded with 28 points and 8 rebounds and international forward Jose Rodriguez (201-92, college: Texas Southern) scored 16 points and 8 rebounds. Piratas' coach gave the chance to play for eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Atleticos maintains sixth position with 8-22 record. Loser Piratas keep the third place with 12 games lost. They share the position with Fajardo. Atleticos will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Piratas will play against Indios in Mayaguez and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

No shocking result in a game in Guayama where second ranked Brujos (21-9) defeated 5th ranked Gigantes (5-22) 98-93 on Friday. Strangely Gigantes outrebounded Brujos 40-23 including 25 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 30 assists comparing to just 17 passes made by Gigantes' players. International guard Jorge Pacheco-Ortiz (186-98, college: Liberty) scored 24 points (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) to lead the charge for the winners and American guard Terrico White (196-90, college: Ole Miss, agency: Shark Sports Management) chipped in 17 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists during the contest. American Maurice Kemp (203-91, college: ECU) responded with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 13 rebounds and his fellow American import point guard Kalin Lucas (185-89, college: Michigan St.) scored 20 points and 6 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Brujos maintains second position with 21-9 record having just three point less than leader Bayamon. Gigantes lost seventh consecutive game. They keep the fifth place with 22 games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

Indios were ahead by 8 points after three quarters before a 27-18 charge of Brujos, which allowed them to win the game. Strangely Indios outrebounded Brujos 43-30 including a 20-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 23 assists. Naturalized American point guard Marcus Fillyaw (185-94, college: KWC) saved the victory by scoring 16 points and 9 assists. Guard Anthony Benson (191-94, college: PR-Rio Piedras) contributed with 21 points and 5 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners.
